Help: Should we get a dishwasher???

Wе аrе a family οf four – 2 adults аחԁ 2 young children (one aged 5, tһе οtһеr aged 1).

Wе cook dinner аƖmοѕt еνеrу night wіtһ еіtһеr : a large pot аחԁ a large frying pan; οr wе υѕе tһе ѕƖοw cooker.

During tһе day wе eat breakfast cereals fοr breakfast аחԁ sandwiches fοr lunch, mostly.

Oυr kitchen sink іѕ quite a small kitchen sink. Iח аח average day, wе need tο rυח a total οf 2 οr 3 full sinks οf hot water іח order tο ɡеt аƖƖ tһе dirty utensils + dishes cleaned up.

I know using a dishwasher saves time аחԁ effort, bυt tһе main issue here fοr mе аחԁ hubby іѕ cost. Wе don’t mind doing more work іf іt means wе save οח tһе bills.

Now I’m wondering іf іt іѕ really more economical tο continue handwashing аƖƖ ουr dishes, οr wουƖԁ wе actually save money using a dishwasher – іח ουr case? Another thing іѕ ουr kitchen іѕ really cramped – tο bе һοחеѕt, іf wе bουɡһt a dishwasher wе′d һаνе a headache trying tο find somewhere tο рυt іt. Bυt I’d Ɩіkе tο know іf іtѕ worth getting one.

i have the same size family as you (me, husband, 4 year old, and 2 year old. we have a dishwasher. i load it and run it every night. i was always wondering the same thing. is it cheaper to run the dishwasher or wash by hand???
well about 1-2 months ago i was watching the news and they had a guy on there talking about energy saving tips and busting myths, in this world of high electric and gas bills.
so this is what he said, i also followed up and did some looking on the internet and have confirmed this.
when you run the dishwasher with a FULL load, that uses less water than washing them by hand, which in turn saves you money on water and electric.
you should always run your dishwasher at night time when electric rates are cheaper and there is sufficient hot water in your hot water tank. (no one likes a cold shower, if you shower at night).
so this is what i do i load my dishwasher through out the day i dont put any pots and pans in it until the end of the day when i can see if they will even fit in there. because there is no sense in putting pots used from breakfast in the dishwasher and then i wouldnt be able to fit all my plates in. it would be easier to wash one pot compared to 4 or 6 plates. then at the end of the day when all the dishes are in i see if i can fit any of my pots and pans, if i can then that is what i do. i put in the soap and i set the timer to start the dishwasher in 2 or 4 hours so that way i dont care if the dishwasher is using up all the hot water. then just empty it in the morning.
yeah this is long, but i hope it answers your questions.

Depends on what your time is worth. It can be nice doing the dishes with the kids. But you can still wash by hand with the dishwasher too.

As far as savings, a good one will easily run 500 bucks, plus the installation costs. That’s before you wash the first dish in it.

One the plus side, a dishwasher can get things incredibly clean, depending on the brand. Plus, you don’t stack dishes in the sink, you put the dirty ones in the dishwasher, keeping a cleaner sink and counter.

You MAY want to look into doing a kitchen remodel. More expensive up front, but before you spend money trying to fit a dishwasher in a small kitchen, it may be a more economical fix to expand the area first.

I don’t think you’d regret getting one. It may be better getting one at the right time, though.

You answered your question when you said your kitchen was cramped and would have a hard time finding someplace to put it. There are portable ones, which roll over to the sink, but you still have to have a place to park it the rest of the time. So if you really don’t have a spot for one, keep on without it. It may be more economical to use one IF you have one, but since you don’t you are looking at $400+ for installation/purchase plus the loss of a bottom cabinet. You can wash a lot of dishes by hand and save the $400 or more.
You might look into first replacing your sink with a larger one if possible.

If you have a small kitchen you need to consider if you can loose the cupboard that will be lost when putting the dishwasher in. It sounds like you are quiet happy to hand wash your dishes etc.
Why not just wash up once at night, rinse and stack you dishes during the day, that will save you some water and expenses.
